Yes, You Can Actually Enjoy Your Cocktail Hour—Here’s How
As a wedding photographer, one of the things I hear most from couples after their big day is:
“It went by so fast—we barely got to talk to anyone!”
And honestly? They’re not wrong. Wedding days fly. That’s why I always encourage my couples to build space into their timeline for one thing that often gets overlooked:
Your cocktail hour.
Yes—your cocktail hour. Not just the one your guests enjoy while you’re off taking photos.
Because here’s the truth: you’ve put so much love into this day. You deserve to actually be in it.
So… why do couples usually miss cocktail hour?
It’s usually when the bulk of the formal photos happen:
Family portraits
Wedding party shots
Couple portraits
Sometimes even a quick venue flip or touch-up
And while all of those are important, they don’t have to completely take over that sweet window of post-ceremony joy. With a little planning, we can make space for both.
Here’s how I help my couples make it happen:
Do a First Look
If you’re even considering a First Look, here’s your sign. Seeing each other before the ceremony lets us knock out most (if not all) of your wedding party and couple portraits ahead of time. That means after the vows, you’re free to mingle with a drink in hand.
Keep the family photo list short and sweet
Stick to immediate family and any must-have combinations. I help my couples create a clear list ahead of time so it’s quick, organized, and painless—usually 15-20 minutes max.
Build in buffer time
Even a little breathing room in the timeline makes a huge difference. Whether it’s to freshen up, toast privately, or sneak away together before rejoining the party—this moment is gold.
Take a “walk through your wedding”
One of my favorite things to photograph is when the couple sneaks into the reception space or cocktail hour just before everyone else enters. You get a quiet moment to take it all in—and yes, you can totally grab an hors d’oeuvre while you’re at it.
Real Talk: You Deserve to Celebrate
Your wedding isn’t just a photoshoot. It’s a celebration. And while I’m 100% committed to capturing it beautifully, I care even more about you actually living it.
So whether it’s cheers-ing with your college friends, hugging your grandparents, or sneaking off for a tiny taco—let’s make sure you have time to soak up those in-between moments.
Because when you look back on your photos, I want you to say,
“That wasn’t just a beautiful day—it felt like us.”
